Hyun-Soo’s father likely has tennis elbow. Despite the name it’s actually been a problem for blacksmiths for much longer and is a result of overuse of the forearm muscles. Especially with his families history it’s likely that the cause was a poorly positioned anvil, if the face (aka top) of the anvil is to low or too high and the smith isn’t able to bring their elbow to a 90º at impact it puts more stress on the forearm to raise the hammer back up instead of allowing the natural rebound to raise it up naturally. If they aren’t repositioning the anvil each generation it’s likely most of their family has screwed up their arms and have problems gripping a hammer or holding anything with their dominate hand in their old age.
