I wouldn’t be surprised if the Tower mages, or whoever killed the spider, told the villagers that it was alone. Probably never told them they can reproduce in such large numbers so quickly. If I want to be really cynical the Tower mages could have deliberately not told them so they could keep the nest there as a replenishing source of materials. Either way, the local Lord should have been notified a winter spider was hunted near one of his villages, but with both he and his wife gone from the estate it is probably not running all that well, even with appointing someone to oversee things in their absences.
