Strange thought I had but what if every friend of Ed lives near him and each of their hut will be built in a sort of special way according to their character. Ed's hut was purely built from hardship symbolizing his skill and survival instinct. While Janica's hut is built from the spirits that she made contract with, Lortelle gets a two stories house, and Lucy gets a cat home

And that the off-hand should be placed as far away from the dominant hand as possible to give the maximum amount of leverage.
Now, people with a bit more experience would know that you can alter those hand positions during the fight, but you'd never place them in the middle of the handle close together like you're about to swing a golf-club.
