One of my pet peeves about these stories is that the main characters get lost in their own world due to sudden information. Does everything happen within a few seconds mentally or are the other characters who were talking to him and watching him go from bored to ecstatic and are wondering what’s wrong with him? Does time freeze or something?
it’s more of a visualization for a mental process. It’s no problem to just read it in the novel, for example, but to give us a frame of him looking at them, slight surprise, and his gaze drift off, while flooding the frames with nothing but speech bubbles? Yeah, that’s boring lol. Good rule of thumb is, whenever you see the background become kinda abstract, consider it being a visual representation for thought process.
