It's a myth that people believe is true because of how widespread it is. Biting your tongue can't kill a healthy man on its own. The wound will clot long before blood loss becomes a concern. It will bleed directly into the mouth however, so it poses a choking hazard, but choking to death is not terribly difficult for a captor to prevent and takes minutes. Those with special physiques whose wounds don't clot probably aren't going to form entire gangs of equally ailing individuals. Just training martial arts is likely to result in death for such individuals.
