Great outcome so far. In the end, protecting others is a personal choice coming from your own internal values. The mc can just climb for his own sake or stop climbing and just reap the rewards of being the strongest on earth regardless whether earth perishes in the future since he prob wont be around to experience it. Only those that have experienced what the mc went through can understand why he wants to continue climbing this insane trials. its got nothing to do with being a gd dmn mother teresa but its coming from his own principles and values.
