Popularity might be nice to have as it may gain you readers of all kinds, but if the foundation of a series is flimsy instead of being firm, popularity will only serve as a breeding ground that will allow mediocrity to take hold. Great series put into cold storage for a long period of time tend to die an early death in this way. It's always the art that dies first, with the plot not being too far behind. I am waiting for the series to hit the 50th chapter mark, that's usually the milestone wherein you can look back to see if the art is still holding up; if by fifty it's still pretty and the storyline is still solid, next milestone is the 100th chapter, and by that time if it's still solid you wait for another hundred. *Rinse and repeat until you feel like dropping it already. If story and art carry all the way to the end, how grand would that be?
